It’s Alive, in big red letters

TAKE ACTION! http://bit.ly/5062ItsAlive

Even though the House didn’t vote on the Bad Washington Privacy Act (SB 5062) before the cutoff last Sunday, the bill is still alive! The session ends April 25, and tech lobbyists are making one more try to pass the weak, industry-backed bill that only gives the illusion of privacy.

But Rep. Shelley Kloba’s introduced several amendments to fix the Bad WPA, including a “striking amendment” — completely replacing the text of the current bad bill. It’s opt-in. It’s got a strong private right of action, so if you sue companies breaking the law and win, they have to pay damages and penalties. It removes the pre-emption clause and closes some of the biggest loopholes.

It’s not perfect, but Rep. Kloba’s striking amendment offers real privacy protection for Washingtonians. The civil rights and community groups in the Tech Equity Coalition support it. So does the ACLU of Washington — and more than 20 Indivisible groups. And Rep. Kloba has also introduced several other amendments with specific fixes. They’re not as broad as the striking amendment but they’re all important improvements.

So please contact your legislators and ask them to SUPPORT the Kloba amendments — and vote NO on the Bad Washington Privacy Act if the amendments don’t pass.
